Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease that causes facial
redness. Rosacea affects mostly adults, usually people with
fair skin, between the ages of 30 and 60. Left untreated,
rosacea tends to be progressive, which means it gets worse
over a period of time.
In most cases, rosacea is cyclic, which means it may flare
up for a period of weeks to months, and then signs and symptoms
lessen for a while before rosacea flares up again.
The cause is unknown, but researchers believe that it is
likely due to the combination of hereditary and environmental
factors.
Although the exact cause of rosacea remains a mystery,
a number of factors can aggravate it or make it worse by
increasing blood flow to the surface of the skin. Some of
these include:
- Sunlight
- Temperature extremes
- Alcohol
- Hot food or beverages
- Spicy foods
- Hot baths, saunas
- Corticosteroids
- Drugs that dilute blood vessels, including some blood
pressure medications
A series of at least 3 to 5 treatments of Intense Pulse
Light (IPL) has proven to be an effective treatment for
keeping rosacea under control.
To prevent flare ups, consider the following suggestions;
Wear dermalogica sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher to protect
skin from sun
Protect face in winter with scarf or ski mask
Avoid irritating your skin by rubbing or touching it too
much
Avoid overheating
Avoid microdermabrasions, as this will irritate the skin
Avoid using skin products with alcohol or other skin irritants.
Use products that are labeled non-comodogenic ~ these won’t
clog your oil and sweat glands, (pores) as much
If you wear make-up, consider wearing red or yellow tinted
pre-foundation creams and powders, (dermalogica redness
relief) because they are designed to counter skin redness.
Avoid alcohol
